Period of runny nose can be a challenging one to cope with.

Rhinovirus popularly known as the common cold virus is an RNA, non-enveloped virus.

It is the most common cause of the disease known as the "Common Cold", which most of us call Catarrh. It is the cause of your runny nose. Apart from it, Coronavirus, Adenovirus and Influenza virus can also cause similar cases.

Did You Know !? That Common Cold (Cattarrh) is the commonest disease/infection that affects humans?

Rhinovirus only infects Humans and Chimpanzees and it is regarded as the most common human disease. It affects an average individual about two times in a year.

The virus has more than 100 different types which have different methods of avoiding the process of vaccine production. For this reason, it is hard to produce vaccines that can actually be effective on all the times. This makes it hard to be controlled with vaccination.

Mode of Transmission

1. It can be transmitted by direct contact with an infected person through aerosol (via air droplets).

2. It can also be transmitted indirectly when droplets land on surfaces and another person contracts it through the finger to the nose, eyes or mouth.

It causes Upper Respiratory Tract Infection mainly, when it enters the body and very unlikely to cause lower respiratory tract infections.

Symptoms

The usual symptoms it presents with may include:

  1. Nasal discharge
  2. Nasal obstruction
  3. Sneezing
  4. Sore throat, etc

Treatment for Common Cold

There is no particular treatment or vaccine readily available for common cold.

However, some of the symptoms can be relieved using some drugs.

Preventive Measures

It can be prevented by avoiding physical contact with an infected person.

Handwashing and use of nose mask should be encouraged while touching of the nose, eyes and mouth especially with unwashed fingers should be avoided.
