Unexpectedly, this week I received a very special gift. Fitting to the approaching holidays and the current season, a few days ago I got this fancy Stollen gift. Yes, the German Christmas cake has also made it into this corner of our planet, and together with the ubiquitous Baumkuchen now stands for the glory of German bakery skills. I would prefer German bread, because when it comes to bread, the rest of the world has completely different ideas than the bakers and their customers in Central Europe. But of course I'm quite happy about the Stollen which I got here so far from home and I was quite curious what was behind the wrapping.

The whole piece was quite heavy, which should already be a clear sign of quality. After unwrapping, I first noticed that Stollen was not as usual from top to bottom dusted with white powdered sugar, but only slightly covered with a darker type of sugar. Nevertheless, the Stollen smelled sweet and definitely like Christmas, which is probably mainly due to the cinnamon inside.

Of course, the Stollen did not remain long in this form. Since it was already opened, there was no reason to not cut it into small piece. The look inside convinced further, in addition to some nuts there were various dried fruits, which seemed to be well arranged.

Well then, let's have a bit and see how it tastes. And yes, there was actually nothing to complain about. I say actually, because the good Stollen was of course much too sweet. But this is probably true for all Stollen, as the confectioners do not like to be stingy with their sweet main ingredient. I, on the other hand, would like it to be a little less sweet, but that applies not only to Stollen, but to many other baking and snacking products.

Still, I felt good after eating some Stollen together with the family, and we suddenly felt a little more Christmassy. Sure we saved some far loter so we can repeat today's fun once or twice more. It is still some time until the holidays, and we better not overdo the fun yet. Once again, I would like to thank the noble donor for this sweet little surprise. By the way, today for dinner we will have German bread, which fortunately sometimes finds its way onto our table here in the land of the rising sun as well.
