The way an individual, feels about himself, is usually based on his or her life experiences. Different life experiences, make people act in different ways.

However, there are some prevalent causes of low self-esteem. These would be listed below.

Non-supportive parents: A non-supportive parent or guardians, can be a major blow to the self-esteem of a teenager. A teenager, who is constantly criticized and belittled, would most likely grow up having low self-esteem.

Bearing this in mind, parents and guardians should strive to encourage more as opposed to criticizing most of the time.

It is true some teenagers may not have an impressive attitude. Still, as a parent, a mild-tempered discipline and a loving correction, would do more good than harsh criticism.

Negative friends: Keeping company with negative friends, would have a terrible impact on a teens self-esteem. The reason is, negative people swim in negative ideas, thereby producing negative output.

There is a maxim that states “Misery loves company.” This is true when it comes to negative friends. As a teenager, spending time with negatively minded individuals would have a terrible impact on your self-esteem.

Most times, teenagers find it difficult to comprehend a negative friend. Well, if that is the case, below are major characteristics of negative friends.

 Negative friends trivialize positive ambitions.

 Negative friends are critical of others

 Negative friends spend quality time on less important things.

Negative friends trivialize positive ambitions: This is to be understood as it sounds. Friends who are negative minded, often play down positive ambitions.

Let's say, as a teenager, you decide to represent your school in a nationwide spelling bee competition. As expected, you would need encouragement.

However, a negative friend would like to weaken your resolve to participate in the competition by playing down your chances of success.

The friend may begin to remind you, ‘’You know it's a nationwide event. What are your chances of success?’’. That is the attitude of a typical negative friend.

Instead of trying to instil belief in you, a negative friend would be solely focused on tearing apart your determination. For goodness sake, you knew it is a nationwide event, so why the reminder?

Conclusion

That being said, the aforementioned are the kind of friends an individual needs to ward-off, so as not to hurt his or her self-esteem.
