We all know these cute and at first glance absolutely friendly inhabitants of the deep sea.

And today I wanted to bring up interesting facts about dolphins that you might not know about.

1. Dolphins have no sense of smell at all due to the lack of special receptors in the respiratory tract. Their inability to smell is compensated by excellent hearing. It should be noted that among the tastes, dolphins are able to sense only the degree of salinity of the food they eat.

2. Dolphins are quite playful and friendly. They have a well-developed intellect, thanks to which they are able to remember each other's names and recognize themselves in the mirror. The brains of these mammals have evolved like the human brain.

3. Dolphins, like other marine mammals, do not drink sea water, but replenish their need for liquid with water from their food.

4. At one time, fighting dolphins were used in the USA and Russia. They were trained to assist divers in supplying equipment, recognizing and lifting sunken objects. Later, such dolphins began to be used for medicinal purposes, helping to rehabilitate children suffering from autism.

5. The maximum speed of a dolphin in the water is about 46 km. hour. The usual speed of movement is 5-11 km per hour, which is comparable to a person's walking.

6. Dolphins have a different number of teeth, which can be parted from 8 to 250 teeth. Despite such solid teeth, which there are many envious people, these mammals do not chew food, but only grab their prey with their teeth and swallow it whole.

7. Killer whales or "killer whales" are the largest oceanic dolphins. The largest were 9.75 meters long.

8. Dolphins are born tail-first, unlike other small-feeding ones. Immediately after birth, the mother lifts the calf to the surface for the first breath of air.

9. Dolphins love to live in huge flocks that hunt and play together. Large flocks can number 1000 individuals.

10. Dolphins' menu includes fish, squid and crustaceans. An adult dolphin weighing 120 kg. , eats about 15 kg. fish daily.
